So I guess what I’m trying to say is that we gotta climb the tree to see things more for what they are. And we gotta look at the ground we’re standing on, where we positioned ourselves, imagining there was safety there. Humans are humans, we’re all very interested in safety.
We’re asked right now to examine our assumptions about safety from a truly existential place. Did you imagine being liberal kept you safe? (I’m doing it! See?? I’m antiracist! I’m feminist! I’m LGBTQ friendly!) Did you imagine American politics to have places of safety within it? (At least I’m not Republican!) Did you imagine being American was a safe thing to be in the world? (Maybe I think about it, maybe I don’t, but I’m gonna go to bed tonight and it will be warm there and I’ll have food to eat in the morning.)
And if you’re patting yourselves on the back right now for having kept your distance from American politics all along, well, that has some problems too.
